CURRICULUM

Roman artefacts

Year 4

Year 4 children have been learning about the Romans.

Roman artefacts from Birmingham Museums ‘Museum in a Box’ were loaned to the school for the children to experience and handle first-hand.  Within the boxes were a number of Roman Coins that we used as the starting point for this project.

The children began by cutting the shape of their coin from compressed foam, noting that the coins weren’t perfectly round.  Detail was added to their coin shape using pencil: animals, roman numerals and intricate patterns.

On completion, the coin designs were printed onto black card using metallic silver and bronze inks.

The completed artwork includes all of the children’s Roman Coins displayed together as a collection, similar to those exhibited and stored in museums.
