Weaving

Year 5

Year 5 children have been learning about the Vikings during their history lessons.

As a way for the children to develop further their understanding, Year 5 worked with artist Andrew Tims to explore textile techniques used by the Vikings during the Viking Age, specifically weaving.

The children worked onto a cardboard frame that holds the warp (string) to experiment with a range of different coloured and textured wools and feathers (weft).

The completed woven artworks have been fixed to a stained balsa wood base and installed directly onto the wall as a way to frame and give value to the work.

In weaving, the weft is the term for the thread or yarn which is drawn through, inserted over-and-under, the lengthwise warp yarns that are held in tension on a frame or loom to create cloth.
