Handa's Hen
Handa’s Hen
Year 1
Year 1 children have been reading Handa’s Hen by Eileen Browne.
As a way for the children to develop further their understanding of the story, Year 1 worked with artist Andrew Tims to create artwork focusing on the element of the story they were particularly interested in – the animals that Handa and her friend Akeyo discover during their hunt for her Grandma’s black hen Mondi.
The children chose the animal they wanted to create using collage techniques, and set about cutting shapes from paper and assembling them together to form their animal, for example; a sparrow, butterfly, spoonbill or lizard.
At the same time, Year 1 children were learning about different materials, including: wood, metal, plastic, paper, fabric, glass, brick and rock, and so were able to explore these further by using images of the aforementioned materials to create their collaged animal artwork.
